To understand how insulation works, it helps to understand the different forms of heat flow we must safeguard against. This involves three basic mechanisms of heat transfer- conduction, convection, and radiation. Of the three, radiant heat makes up the majority of transfer by accounting for up to 93% of it. It has a way of making its way into your home's thermal barrier, causing high energy bills and comfortability issues. Most traditional insulation materials work by slowing down conductive and convective heat flow but do little to combat radiant heat. Regardless of the season, heat transfers from warmer to cooler areas until there is no longer a temperature difference. This means in the Winter, heat escapes from the warm living space directly into the adjacent unheated attic, eventually making it out roof vents causing inefficiency. Heat flow can also move indirectly through interior ceilings, walls, and floors- wherever there is a difference in temperature. During the cooling season, heat flows from the sun's radiant heat to the interior of your house, penetrating under-insulated areas. We regularly see both of these heat transfers happening with our FLIR thermal imaging capabilities. Proper attic insulation is a must with today's high energy prices! Without it, you're susceptible to expensive energy bills and temperature imbalances- which can also cause damage from moisture, mold & mildew. Do I need insulation?
Radiant heat is the most important heat flow for us to manage, accounting for up to 93% of it.
Your attic's insulation is like everything else in your house, it doesn't last forever. Eventually it gets old and starts to degrade which could mean problems from reduced R-value. Some of these problems are nuisances- a drafty house or uncomfortable temperatures for example. Others can hit home in the form of high energy bills or elevated health risks thanks to allergens, mold, and even rodents and their droppings. So how do you know if your attic insulation needs to be replaced? We'll start by looking at some of the factors that can weaken insulation, then highlight the signs that something may be wrong. The good news is, with our thermal imaging capabilities, it's fairly easy to tell which form of thermal transfer you're dealing with, and then recommend which type of attic insulation will be most effective. So don't worry, Midwest has you covered on all three types of heat transfer your attic is experiencing!
All traditional insulation materials are limited to a shelf-life. It doesn't matter if you have fiberglass, cellulose, mineral wool or foam- no insulation is perfect or invincible from breaking down for various reasons. Here are some common issues that can significantly affect your attic insulation. If you have noticed any of the following, it may be time to upgrade your attic insulation:

Polyshield Attic-Guard is a type of Nasa® based reflective insulation (radiant barrier) designed to completely block the transfer of heat into or out of your home or building instead of just slowing it down like traditional insulation materials. It performs in the Summer, working similar to a sunshade for your car, by blocking 97% of radiant heat generated by the sun from ever being absorbed into your home, garage, pole barn, metal building, etc. This results in a cooler, more comfortable and energy efficient space. When the sun heats a roof, it's primarily the sun's radiant energy that makes the roof hot. Much of this heat makes its way through the roofing materials into the attic side of the roof. The hot roof rafters then radiate their gained heat energy onto the cooler attic surfaces, including the air ducts and insulation on the attic floor. Our Polyshield Attic-Guard blocks the heat transfer from the underside of the roof, preventing it from ever heating up your insulation and air ducts. Polyshield is effective in the Winter too. It provides a thermal layer helping to reflect the heat created by your furnace back into the living space, keeping you warmer and saving money on your heating costs. With energy savings in both hot and cold months, it will pay for itself many times over the life of your home. It's truly unique among insulation when it comes to both performance and value. In the majority of situations, one sheet of Polyshield, installed over new or existing insulation, is much more effective than continuing to add fiberglass or cellulose insulation.

Your attic is the largest void in your home's thermal barrier. It holds a tremendous amount of heat in the summer and cold in the winter. The only thing separating it from your living space before the addition of insulation is a thin sheet of drywall (your ceiling). The traditional insulation most homes have don’t shield you completely from the outside temperatures or from high energy bills. Polyshield Attic-Guard blocks 97% of radiant heat from infiltrating or escaping your building's thermal barrier, saving you 20% on energy costs & improving comfort levels!
Even when new, traditional insulation is only designed to absorb and slow down the movement of heat rather than block it completely. If you're familiar with the term R-value, this is where it comes from. The "R" stands for "resistance" and refers to a materials ability to resist heat flow. The higher the number, the more resistance you have but inevitably the heat will get through. So even with brand new insulation, your home is susceptible to high energy bills and costly repairs on heating & cooling systems. Polyshield reduces wear & tear on your HVAC!
One reason for expensive power bills that many homeowners don’t consider is depleted R-value. As your insulation ages, its ability to resist heat decreases, along with its effectiveness (R-value). In addition, insulation that’s been subject to moisture or has settled over time does not provide its labeled R-value. So, unless you’ve updated your building’s attic insulation recently, you probably don’t have as much protection as you think. Add our lifetime guaranteed Polyshield to your attic and it's the last time you will ever have to insulate again!

The cold winters & very hot summers we have in the Midwest make it very difficult for your depleted insulation's R-value to keep up. The brutal summers cook your roof & insulation, then the winters freeze them out. Polyshield serves as a protective thermal barrier, never allowing the heat to penetrate or escape your home. When you apply our reflective insulation system over traditional insulation materials, you are essentially protecting them from the elements and increasing their effectiveness all season long! During the Summer months, the sun heats up your roof, causing your air conditioning unit to constantly run to keep up with the rising temperatures in your home. Polyshield® Attic-Guard is 97% efficient at blocking radiant heat transfer. You will experience much more comfort in your home, while drastically saving on cooling costs! During the Winter, the heat passing through your insulation radiates upward, eventually escaping through the vents in your roof. Aside from the obvious issue of reducing the efficiency of your furnace, this process can cause ice damming, which is a well-known and a serious problem in our Region. Applying Polyshield Attic-guard in your attic envelope will reflect that radiant heat back towards the living space, saving heating costs and reducing ice-damming. At this point you will have protection against all three types of energy transfer- conductive, convective and radiant. Call or email today for your free quote on attic insulation.
